Learn Bus Stop Division!

How Does Bus Stop Division Work?

Imagine you have a big group of sweets (that's called the dividend) and you want to share them equally among some friends (that's the divisor). The bus stop method helps you figure out how many sweets each friend gets!

It looks a bit like a bus stop:

      ______
    divisor | dividend

Let's try an example: 68 ÷ 2

  1. Set it up: Write the 2 outside the bus stop and the 68 inside.
          ______
         2 | 6 8

  2. Divide the first digit: How many 2s go into 6? That's 3. Write the 3 on top.
            3____
         2 | 6 8

    2 x 3 = 6. Write the 6 under the 6 inside the bus stop and subtract. 6 - 6 = 0.
            3____
         2 | 6 8
           - 6
           ---
             0

  3. Bring down the next digit: Bring down the 8 next to the 0. Now you have 08, which is just 8.
            3____
         2 | 6 8
           - 6
           ---
             0 8

  4. Divide again: How many 2s go into 8? That's 4. Write the 4 on top.
            3 4__
         2 | 6 8
           - 6
           ---
             0 8
           - 8
           ----
               0

    2 x 4 = 8. Write the 8 under the 8 and subtract. 8 - 8 = 0.
  5. The answer: The number on top is your answer! So, 68 ÷ 2 = 34. Each friend gets 34 sweets!

Important: Sometimes you might have some sweets left over. That's called a remainder. For this quiz, we'll only use questions where there's no remainder!
